Building an honest and open therapeutic relationship is the foundation for success in counseling. I believe that my down to earth personality and passion to help and connect with others provide a safe and comfortable environment to explore the issues you may be facing.
I work with a wide range of transitional and mental health issues including teen challenges, ADHD, acculturation issues, anxiety and depression. Change of life events may include transition to college, change of career, or divorce.
Whether in crisis or managing ongoing challenges, I work with each individual to create both short and long term goals to recover the balance and joy in their lives.
I am a licensed clinical professional counselor and have over twenty years experience in the field. I grew up as a first generation Filipino-American in the suburbs of Chicago. I earned my Bachelor of Science in psychology and zoology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I worked as a medical technologist for five years before earning my Master of Arts in Counseling from Northwestern University.
I spent my first years of clinical experience in community mental health on the north side of Chicago. I then worked at an alternative high school with at-risk teens and their families. I have been working in private practice since 2007 and continue to be linked to the community as a resource therapist in a partial hospitalization program.
Given my professional background and personal experiences, I have always been interested in how the many factors in one’s life impact their development, perspective and relationships.
I take a systemic approach when working with my clients. Whether I am working with an individual, couple or family, I look at each person as a unique individual while considering the multiple influences in their life. I strive to identify and access the internal and external resources each individual possesses.
When working with children and adolescents, I believe in the importance of collaborating with school, other providers and including parents and other family members when appropriate.
Depression, fear, and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at some point in our lives. Through counseling and treatment, I am able to help you recover motivation, perspective, and joy that you once had in your life.
It is common for families to face times of conflict, loss, and life transitions. Dealing with these changes are sometimes stressful and frustrating. Family therapy offers families a way to develop or maintain a healthy, functional family.
Children and teens face challenges that range from academic stress to trauma. Sometimes it is overwhelming and confusing to navigate these experiences without the guidance of a professional. I can provide a non-biased, non-judgmental environment where your child can feel safe and comfortable. By forming a healthy therapeutic relationship they can focus on the skills and strategies needed to get through difficult times.
